The purpose is to encourage its employees to come up with innovative ideas. I-Flex hosts ‘The Great Idea Contest’ every year. Employees are offered rewards for successful selections of their ideas as well as for filing patent applications based on them. 

Why employees? Well, they are just the main unit in the organization that is fully in contact with the customers. They are the ones who hear the customers. Hear about their problems (with the wife, husband, kids - people are feeling open after some time to reveal a lot!) and hear about their unfulfilled needs. This is an information that you can't gather by mailing surveys or even if you initiate a direct conversation with your customer. Sometimes your employee would know better than you about your customers.
