ISO 9001:2008 vs. ISO 9001:2015 Management Review

The concept of gathering inputs for the management review was revised according to the new approach of the ISO 9001:2015. For more detailed information of the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 please review the following articles.

Review of Changes

While the ISO 9001:2008 requires review of the quality objectives and their suitability to the quality management system, the 2015 requires a review of changes in the business environment and how these changes might affect the strategic of the firm. The 2015 is tricky. The 2008 says it clearly –

  • please show me changes and improvements that occurred
  • how they relate to the QMS and,
  • how did you react.

The 2015 wants you to –

  • Review your defined strategy to achieve your quality objectives in your business environment (consisted of relevant interested parties see chapter 4.2)
  • review changes in this business environment
  • review whether these changes affect your QMS and,
  • how did you react

Now, it depends of how tough or old fashioned is your auditor; if he is persistent and pedant he might want you to review your business environment, your strategy and its relation to the QMS, see how did you examine changes in the business environment and survey your reaction. Another difference is the requirement for reviewing opportunities for improvements – the 2015 neglects this requirement.

Review Inputs

The ISO 9001:2015 is still very much explicit regarding the information and data that are required to be reviewed during the management review. The inputs of the management review shall indicate how status of the performance of the quality management system. In other words, this information shall be indicators and trends of the quality management system. To remind you an indicator is a type of performance measurement that evaluates the success of an activity in which it engages. Trends are changes impacting your business environment and its relevant issues. In other words the key index performance of the QMS must be evaluated and changes that occurred must be reviewed.

Some semantics were dropped by the 2015; there is a requirement (ISO 9001:2015) to review the nonconformities and corrective actions instead of status of preventive and corrective actions  – preventive action is a concept that was dropped by the ISO 9001:2015 Standard.

Review Outputs

The Review outputs were revised. Improvement and opportunities (2015) instead of continual improvements and the relation to the effectiveness of the quality management system was neglected. The resources related to the decisions are not required to be mentioned.
